LIFElab's mandate is to stimulate and promote the creation
of a vibrant biotechnology economy in the East Coast region, stretching from Nelspruit
in the North, to Durban in the centre, and onwards to Port Elizabeth in the South.
As part of the strategy by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) under
the auspices of its National Biotechnology Strategy to develop bright young talent
in anticipation of future skills requirements in the field of Biotechnology, LIFElab
is sending a call for University graduates in the field of Biotechnology and related
areas to apply for merit bursaries for 2010. The opportunity will be restrictive
to studies in the East Coast region.
Please note: Applications will begin in October and the form will be available on the website.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE
Students who meet the following criteria will be eligible for LIFElab
bursaries:-
- South African citizens who intend to study full time
- At Honours, Masters or Doctoral levels
- Must be studying towards a degree in Natural Sciences / BioSciences / Biotechnology
- Preference will be made to students from Previously Disadvantaged backgrounds in
terms of the Employment Equity Act prescriptions, with specific preference to African
students
- Students must have confirmation of their acceptance from the university and be in
receipt of formal confirmation of ethics or Medicines Control Council approval if
this is required by the university for proposed fields of study
- Qualifying criteria will be a minimum of 65% aggregate for entry from undergraduate
bursaries (those obtaining the bursary for the first time)
- Those that are seek funding / financial support for subsequent years will be required
to achieve 60% aggregate before their bursaries can be renewed
- Demonstrate community orientation/support/sensitivity/development
WHAT DOES THE BURSARY INCLUDE
The LIFElab bursary is comprehensive and includes the
following:-
- 100% of the prescribed university tuition fees, registration fees and exams fees
will be paid directly to the university
- A book allowance
- Allowance for meals and pocket money will be paid to the individual on a monthly
basis and in advance
- Conference fees will be drawn out of the budget allocated per student in each category,
however this will be subject to a written request that is submitted to LIFElab.
An amount equal to the average rate for accommodation in a single room at the university
at which the bursar is studying which again will be paid directly to the university.
If the student chooses to stay outside the university, this amount will be paid
directly to the student on a monthly basis over a 12 month period, subject to proof
of accommodation and banking details supplied LIFElab.

Whilst the intention of the bursaries are to cover full tuition, registration, exams
fees, books and accommodation, this will be limited to a maximum, as it relates
to the level of study and should be allocated to cover for tuition, registration
and exam fees first, as follows:-
- Honours - R40 000.00 per annum (payment limited to 1 year of study)
- Masters – R60 000.00 per annum (payment limited to duration of study up to a
maximum limit of 2 years)
- Doctoral – R80 000.00 per annum (payment limited to three years of study)

The bursary does not cover for supplementary examinations or re-submission of thesis
or research paper or qualifying paper, this will be for the student’s own account.

If a student fails their examination for whatever reason, the bursary will automatically
cease.
|

Bursaries will not be awarded to students that hold other bursaries for the same
year that the LIFElab bursary is intended
(ie. Students cannot obtain bursaries from different organisations at the same time).

In each year, LIFElab will accept new
bursary intakes subject to funding available and students meeting the entry qualifications
specified in this guideline
